Toilets are one of the household fixtures we do not think about until something goes wrong. Many issues with your toilet can be repaired; however there comes a time when replacing your toilet is the smarter (and more cost-effective) choice. The following are signs that it may be time for a replacement toilet:
- Frequent Clogs and Poor Performance
If your toilet clogs or drains slowly often, even with normal use, it could be a sign that is no longer operating with efficiency. Older models, in particular, aren’t designed with the same flushing power as newer, more advanced toilets. It should not be necessary to plunge your toilet on a regular basis.
- Cracks in the Tank or Bowl
A crack in your toilet, no matter how small, can overtime lead to leaks. Leaks can cause water damage to your floors and surrounding areas. If you notice any cracks, it is likely time to start thinking about replacing your toilet.
- Constant Repairs Are Adding Up
During the life of your toilet it is likely that you will have to replace parts such as the flapper, fill valve, or even the handle. While these parts are not as costly as a new toilet, over time constant replacing of them will add up.
- Wobbling or Instability
If your toilet wobbles or is unstable when you sit on it, there may be a problem with the seal or the floor underneath. Have a plumber check to see if it the problem is a loose bolt or a worn out wax ring/gasket.
- Outdated and Inefficient Design
Older toilets may use more water per flush than modern models. Installing a newer, water-efficient toilet can potentially reduce your water usage and lower your utility bills.
- Persistent Stains and Wear
If your toilet always looks dirty despite regular cleaning, it could be due to worn or porous surfaces that trap stains and odors. Over time, the material can degrade, making it harder to maintain a clean, sanitary appearance.
- Leaks Around the Base
Water pooling around the base of your toilet is never a good sign. It could be caused by a worn wax ring, but if the issue persists after repair, it may indicate a deeper problem with the toilet itself or its connection to the drain.
- Age of the Toilet
Toilets can last many years, but they will not last forever. If yours is on the older side, upgrading can provide better efficiency, improved performance, and peace of mind.
Just a reminder:
A toilet that is not properly functioning can lead to water damage, higher bills, and frustration.
