FAQ – Residential Plumbing

Locate and turn off your home’s main water shut-off valve immediately to prevent major water damage. If the leak is isolated to a single fixture (like a toilet or sink), use the individual shut-off valve behind or under that unit. Then, turn off your water heater to prevent tank burn-out and drain remaining water by opening lower-level faucets.

Sudden pressure drops usually point to a few common issues:

  • Clogged aerators: Mineral buildup in single faucet screens.
  • Pressure regulator failure: A failing PRV valve on your main supply line.
  • Hidden leaks: A cracked pipe underground or inside walls.
  • Municipal issues: Work being done on the main street supply.

Check your water meter while all fixtures, appliances, and hose spigots are turned off. If the meter dial or leak indicator is moving, water is running somewhere in your system. Other signs include unexplainable spikes in your water bill, damp spots on walls or ceilings, warm areas on floors, or the faint sound of running water when nothing is in use.

To avoid severe clogs and sewer backups, keep these out of your plumbing:

  • Kitchen: Fats, oils, grease (FOG), coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta/rice (which expand), and fibrous vegetables (celery, corn husks).
  • Bathroom: “Flushable” wipes (they do not break down like toilet paper), feminine hygiene products, cotton balls, paper towels, and dental floss.

You should flush your water heater tank once a year. Flushing removes sediment buildup (minerals like calcium and lime) that settles at the bottom, which degrades heating efficiency, causes popping or rumbling noises, and shortens the unit’s overall lifespan.
